Maribor finish runners-up in first Harvey Norman Slovenian National Championships

In a strong display Maribor reached the final of the first Slovenian National Championships. Having defeated Ljubljana Slovenes to book their ticket into the final, Maribor did themselves proud by finishing 2nd in their first year of competitive cricket. Clearly Manish Vyas has done a wonderful job in coaching his group of young Slovene players and they will all surely improve rapidly.

First matches vs Mežica and First win for Maribor

On Wednesday 2nd May 2007, Maribor CC played in its first official matches vs fellow Slovene club Mežica CC in Mežica in the north of the country. Paul told me that he had found 12 players for the first match, most of them being Slovene and new to cricket.

2 games were played, in which Mežica won the first by 12 runs, but the second was won by Maribor quite easily. A good start for the club and a good rehearsal for the Slovenian Championships in Ljubljana next week.

Enjoy the following pictures (click for larger versions).

Mežica CC vs Maribor CC at Ručnik nad Mežico Wednesday 2nd May 2007

Mežica batting vs Maribor. (Rudi Lasnik facing, Sandi Steblovnik non-striker). What a great backdrop for a game of cricket!

Another gorgeous photo of the 1st game between the 2 Slovenian clubs. Our thanks to friend of Mežica CC Mitja Lednik for these wonderful pictures.

Sandi Steblovnik of Mežica  about to hit one, (Rudi Lasnik non-striker), Manish of Maribor prepares for the catch at the short cover position.

Border policeman Aleksander Kitek of Mežica is a disappointed  spectator here after being caught for a duck. He would soon have some revenge by taking  2 wickets in the first over  bowling for Mežica. How many cricket grounds in the world let you sit among mountain wildflowers like this?
