Mežica CC become first National Champions

Mežica CC has won the 2007 Harvey Norman Slovenian National Cricket Championships beating Maribor CC in the final and finsihing above Bela Krajina CC and Ljubljana Slovenes.

Mežica CC pose for the photographers at Valburga after collecting the winner's trophy from Brad.

Mežica's only hiccup along the way was to eventual runners-up Maribor in game 3 of the first day. However Mežica had the last laugh winning the rematch (the Final) as well as winning the prize for best batsman of the tournament to Rudi Lasnik. Although he didn't score the highest score of the tournament he consistently held the Mežica batting line up together, scoring regualrly along the way.

Mežica won the first game of Day 2 against the strongly fancied Bela Krajina outfit. Mežica constantly applied the pressure to the big hitting Bela Krajina boys and ran out the dangerous pairing of both Egon and Robi Jakofčič (both Slovenian representative players). This put them into the final against Maribor where they racked up a commanding 72 runs due to some extraordinarily fine batting from veterans Borut Čegovnik and Rudi Lasnik. Both batsmen played some excellent shots for four when the Maribor bowlers strayed onto the legside. Sensible and accurate bowling allowed Mežica to come out as victors by a margin of 17 runs. Congratulations to Mežica, who everyone would agree were worthy champions.

Mežica defeat Ljubljana  but lose thriller to Maribor in Harvey Norman Slovene National Championships.

ALL TEAMS TIED ON ONE WIN, ONE LOSS AFTER 1ST DAY

Saturday the 12th of May saw Mežica play 2 matches in the Harvey Norman Slovene National Championships. First up was a match against Ljubljana which saw Mežica win the toss and decide to bat. Openers Sandi Steblovnik and Rudi Lasnik played a fine selction of shots all around the ground and the inexperienced Ljubljana side were never really allowed to compete. In the 2nd match however the game went to the final ball of the match, which was successfully scored off by Maribor to clinch victory in a thriller. Scorecards and report ot follow.

Mežica CC vs Maribor CC at Ručnik nad Mežico Wednesday 2nd May 2007

Saturday 5th May 2007

MEŽICA VS MARIBOR DAY A HUGE SUCCESS. BOTH CLUBS WIN ONE MATCH EACH.

In the historic meeting between these 2 teams on Wednesday 2 games were played. Mežica won the first by 12 runs and Maribor recorded their first victory in the 2nd game. The first game took the format of a 15 over a side match, the 2nd was 10 overs each. The game was played on a Flicx pitch in a spectacular meadow at Ručnik nad Mežico and we're sure you will agree that there are not too many grounds in the world anything like this one. Please enjoy the following pictures.

Another gorgeous photo of the 1st game between the 2 Slovenian clubs. Our thanks to friend of Mežica CC Mitja Lednik for these wonderful pictures.

Border policeman Aleksander Kitek of Mežica is a disappointed  spectator here after being caught for a duck. He would soon have some revenge by taking  2 wickets in the first over  bowling for Mežica. How many cricket grounds in the world let you sit among mountain wildflowers like this?

MEŽICA CRICKET AS IT USED TO BE

These fantastic photos show us a glimpse of what it used to be like. These were taken in the same field that the recent Mežica CC vs Maribor CC took place.

Join us in April 1981.

Left to right - The 16 year old Fonza Prevorčič clutches his Milka Chocolate that he has won for being the winner of the latest Single wicket tournament, then his (then 19 yr old) brother Miro (who was a soldier in the Yugoslav army at the time), Samo Iglar (16) clutching a bag containing stumps, bails and a battered copy of the MCC Laws of cricket and soldier / medical technician Tomaž Brumen (19). The dog's name was Runo and belonged to Borut.

Left to right Borut Čegovnik (who was a 19 yr old soldier in the Yugoslav army serving in Banja Luka, Bosnia at the time), Tomaž, Miro, Samo and Fonza (still clinging on to the milk chocolate flavoured trophy).

Thanks to Borut for the pictures and the story.

MEŽICA PREPARE FOR MARIBOR FIXTURE

Mežica cricket club has just sent us these terrific photos and news about their upcoming match against Maribor CC. Founder Borut Čegovnik explains. "We have revived the single wicket tournaments we played as kids in Mežica." (Borut first encountered Single Wicket cricket in Birchington, Kent way back in 1974). "Each player plays for himself with the bat and the ball, until he is out. Up to five players play at once in a round robin system and if we have more we introduce quarter finals, semis etc until we have a winner." Borut then went on to explain that they had held several of these tournaments over the past 3 years. One tournament was named the "Metod Sterže memorial tournament", another the "Jure Uran memorial tournament" both in memory of young players who had sadly died over the years since the first games were played. Another tournament is named the "Jakopič memorial tournament" in memory of the farmer who used to let the boys play on his meadow. "We are trying to get the original meadow, we played on all those years ago, as the venue for our match against Maribor."

Thanks to Borut for sending the photos and sharing the story about a very important part of Slovenian cricket history and heritage. We look forward to sharing more about the big Mežica / Maribor match next week.
