A central element of Mežica council's 'Start of Summer' celebrations was a 15-over match played at
Mežica football club on Friday 22 June.
Mežica won the toss on a warm sunny early evening and chose to bat. Captain Borut Čegovnik showed
their aggressive intentions with a huge six in the 2nd over but was bowled by Damjan Drobir, who finished
with figures of 1-1, in the third. Father and son Lasnik carried the innings forward, after which club President
Sandi Steblovnik led the way with consecutive boundaries off the bowling of Gregor Bohinc. Overall Maribor's
pace attack was ample evidence of the superb coaching they've been getting in the last few weeks and they
restricted Mežica to 60 from their 15 overs. Gregor Bohinc was star of the show, taking 3-12.
Maribor in reply had a poor start with opening bowlers Rudi Lasnik and Brumen taking out the top three with
only 11 on the board. Captain Manish Vyas and the excellent Alen Karahasanović, who stroked three
commanding boundaries, counterattacked and put Maribor well in sight of victory, but after both had been
dismissed the innings subsided with batsmen 7-10 not scoring a run between them. Eventually they were shot
out for 43 and Mežica won by 17 runs.
Maribor's young side are improving remarkably quickly and there's no doubt that their club is going from
strength to strength and will win plenty of games in the near future. As for Mežica, they have enthusiasm,
commitment and a large pool of players who are keen to develop their club.
We hope to have some pictures from the game in the near future.
